[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] The ‘Nammyung Seonbi Cultural Festival,’ honoring ‘Nammyung Jo Sik,’ a representative Confucian scholar of the Joseon Dynasty known for his integrity and practical spirit, will be held.
Sancheong-gun, Gyeongnam Province, and the Nammyung Seonbi Cultural Festival Committee announced on the 14th that the 45th Nammyung Seonbi Cultural Festival will be held twice, on the 15th and 16th, and on November 13th, at the Korean Seonbi Culture Research Institute in Sicheon-myeon.
This year’s Seonbi Cultural Festival will conduct international academic events and literary arts events online and non-face-to-face to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
Various performances, including celebratory performances, will be presented on November 13th after conditions are set in accordance with the government’s ‘With COVID’ policy.
First, on the festival’s opening day, the 15th, from 11 a.m., a non-face-to-face international academic conference titled ‘Core Spirits of Eastern and Western Cultures ? Comparison of Seonbi, Samurai, and Chivalry Spirits’ will be held.
This academic conference will cover the spirit of Chinese literati, Western chivalry, Edo-period samurai spirit, and Korean seonbi spirit.
On the following day, the 16th, at 10 a.m., the ‘Nammyung Memorial Rite’ will take place. The chief officiant will be Kim Seon-yu, chairman of the Nammyung Studies Institute; the second officiant will be Park Pyeong-won, principal of Miryang High School; and the third officiant will be Choi Won-tae, a Confucian scholar from Boeun, Chungbuk, honoring the spirit of Master Nammyung.
Celebratory performances, including the Madanggeuk (traditional Korean outdoor play) ‘Nammyung’ by the theater troupe Keundeul, as well as performances by gugak (traditional Korean music) groups and invited singers, will be held on November 13th in accordance with ‘With COVID’ conditions.
The celebratory performances will feature Park Aeri & Poppin Hyun-jun, who present a collaboration of gugak trot and dance; Jin Hae-seong, gold medalist of the national trot competition; and comedians and trot singers Sangho and Sangmin on stage.
The creative gugak team ‘The Miso,’ known for their high-quality traditional music performances with self-written and composed pieces, will also perform.
Additionally, the 22nd National Sijo Singing Contest, the 19th National Classical Chinese Poetry Writing Contest, and the 2021 Gyeongnam Student Writing Contest will be held non-face-to-face.
Chairman Choi Gu-sik said, “It is regrettable that many programs prepared for experiencing Seonbi culture cannot be showcased to prevent COVID-19. However, on November 13th, when ‘With COVID’ conditions are established, performances that the whole family can enjoy together will be prepared. We ask for your great interest and participation.”
