[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Sebang Lithium Battery Co., Ltd., which signed the first large-scale investment attraction agreement of the year with Gwangju Metropolitan City, held a completion ceremony for its electric vehicle battery pack factory on the afternoon of the 13th at the Pyeongdong 2nd Industrial Complex site in Gwangju.
The completion ceremony was attended by Mayor Lee Yong-seop, Vice Chairman Jo Seok-ho of the Gwangju City Council and other council members, Chairman Lee Sang-woong of Sebang Group, CEO Cha Ju-ho of Sebang Lithium Battery Co., Ltd., Gwangsan District Mayor Kim Sam-ho, and Chairman Lee Young-hoon of the Gwangsan District Council.
Sebang Lithium Battery Co., Ltd. is a subsidiary of Sebang Battery Co., Ltd., the domestic market leader in the traction battery market, and is a company with new technologies in the fields of automotive built-in camera auxiliary batteries and electric vehicle lithium-ion battery module manufacturing.
On January 6th, an agreement was signed with Gwangju City to invest 120 billion KRW to build an electric vehicle battery pack manufacturing plant with a total floor area of 33,000㎡ on a 29,000㎡ site within the Pyeongdong 2nd Industrial Complex.
The factory broke ground in January, was completed at the end of June after six months, and has been undergoing trial operation since September. Starting February next year, it will produce 420,000 battery modules annually. Once the factory is fully operational, it is expected to create 250 jobs and greatly contribute to revitalizing the local economy.
In particular, the newly built factory is equipped with state-of-the-art automated facilities that safely and efficiently control the process of modularizing and packing cells of eco-friendly electric vehicle batteries, operating as an environmentally friendly assembly plant with no emission of pollutants.
Sebang Lithium Battery Co., Ltd. plans to use the newly established Gwangju factory as a foothold for exports to overseas markets. Currently, it is producing prototype batteries for electric commercial vehicles and plans to supply them to European finished vehicle manufacturing plants.
In this regard, Gwangju City has formed a dedicated team since last year and made multiple contacts with Sebang Lithium Battery Co., Ltd., providing comprehensive support such as land acquisition and factory groundbreaking to realize the investment attraction.
Additionally, after groundbreaking, the city has provided administrative services necessary for factory construction and operation, and supported investment incentives according to laws, such as tax reductions and subsidies.
Gwangju City expects that with the completion of the Eco-friendly Automotive Parts Certification Center in the adjacent Bitgreen Industrial Complex to Pyeongdong 2nd Industrial Complex where the factory is located, and with Global Motors, a Gwangju-type job factory, equipped to produce eco-friendly vehicles in the future, it will serve as a catalyst for Gwangju to leap forward as a leading city in eco-friendly automobiles.
Chairman Lee Sang-woong of Sebang Group stated, “The Sebang Lithium Battery Gwangju factory has established a production system equipped with state-of-the-art automated facilities, and we are preparing to mass-produce the highest quality modules and packs.” He added, “At the group level, we will secure bold investments, development, and research personnel, and actively recruit local talents in Gwangju to contribute to creating quality jobs and regional community development.”
Mayor Lee Yong-seop said, “We will spare no administrative cooperation and support to ensure that Sebang Lithium Battery grows into a representative eco-friendly company and that the maxim ‘Investing in Gwangju guarantees success’ is realized.” He added, “We will actively support so that ‘Made in Gwangju’ batteries become the finest premium batteries.”
