[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Sang-hyun] Gyeongsangnam-do announced on the 11th that it held an exchange meeting with the Korea Tourism Organization on the 6th to revitalize tourism in Gyeongnam.

At this exchange meeting chaired by Ha Byung-pil, Acting Governor of Gyeongnam Province, a presentation was made on the "Plan to Revitalize Gyeongnam Tourism Using Big Data" consulted by the organization, and collaboration methods between the two institutions were discussed.

The consulting presented that day was conducted as a pilot case targeting Gyeongnam before nationwide implementation, through consultation between the province and the organization.

The main content analyzed that it would take about four years for the tourism industry to recover to its previous level due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

To effectively overcome such enormous damage, big data suggested breaking away from the existing tourism trends centered on popular areas where people gather and large cities.

According to the survey, since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, tourism trends have changed to include hidden attractions, lesser-known small towns, lifestyle tourism enjoying small escapes from daily life, and increased consumption of tourism content combined with ICT technology aligned with the growing influence of personal media.

To utilize these results, the organization proposed reviewing a public contest project for developing new tourism content in the province and simultaneously promoting active private investment attraction projects.

It also recommended analyzing region-specific tourism behaviors through continuous data collection efforts.

Based on the collected data, patterns of movement points and types of tourism consumption can be identified, which can be used to understand major tourism zones within the region. Aligning tourism plans and promotional marketing directions with that information will effectively respond to post-pandemic tourism demand, it advised.

Acting Governor Ha said, "The results of this consulting will have very high utilization value," and added, "We will do our best to overcome the crisis in the tourism industry based on this content."
