[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The Institute for Research on the Japanese Military 'Comfort Women' Issue will hold the 2021 International Conference on Women's Rights and Peace at the Baekbeom Kim Koo Memorial Hall from the 13th to the 14th.

The theme is "Survivors of the Japanese Military Comfort Women Lead the Wave of Justice and Peace," and to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and increase participation, the event will be held simultaneously online and offline.

This event was organized to seek practical measures for resolving the Japanese military comfort women issue, spreading 'women's rights and peace,' educating future generations, and strengthening international solidarity.

Marking the 30th anniversary of the testimony of the late grandmother Kim Hak-soon, more than 20 experts, researchers, educators, and human rights activists from various fields such as international law, women, human rights, peace education, and security agendas will participate.

The event will be broadcast live online overseas in three languages?Korean, English, and Japanese?via the Institute for Research on the Japanese Military 'Comfort Women' Issue's YouTube channel. Those wishing to participate can pre-register on the conference website by 6 p.m. on the 12th.

On the first day, the 13th, the achievements and limitations of past movements to resolve the Japanese military comfort women issue will be reviewed, and the issue will be re-examined from various perspectives such as gender, judiciary, and history.

In the second part, speakers including Professor Koizue Akiyabashi from Doshisha University in Japan and Professor Ellie Kim from the Graduate School of Civic Peace at Sungkonghoe University, who have participated in Korea-Japan solidarity activities to resolve the Japanese military comfort women issue, will vividly share the practical activities of civil and civic organizations based on their on-site experiences.

On the 14th, the conference will examine how different countries have responded to wartime sexual violence and explore directions for education and research related to the Japanese military comfort women issue.

Jeong Young-ae, Minister of Gender Equality and Family, said, "I hope the International Conference on Women's Rights and Peace will be an opportunity to seek concrete practical measures for resolving the comfort women issue, a representative human rights problem under war and conflict, and for spreading 'women's rights and peace.' The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family will continue commemorative projects to deepen investigations and research on the Japanese military comfort women issue, history education for future generations, and discussions in related fields."
