[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, paid a visit to the National Daejeon Memorial Cemetery as his first schedule.
Lee explained the reason for visiting the Daejeon Memorial Cemetery on the 11th, saying, "I thought it was proper to first pay respects to those who sacrificed for our national community."
After the visit, he told reporters, "The primary duty of the state is security that protects the national community," and added, "I believe it is truly urgent to honor and compensate those who have made special sacrifices to maintain and sustain the national community going forward."
He continued, "There are memorial cemeteries across the country, but this place (Daejeon Memorial Cemetery) is located in the Chungcheong region, which can be said to be important in terms of fairness and equity, a truly significant issue for the Republic of Korea," emphasizing, "The most important path forward is a fair society." He also added, "Not only must fairness exist between individuals, but a balanced country without regional unfairness or imbalance will enable the future development of this nation."
He gave brief answers regarding questions about the primary election process the day before. When asked about the controversy over invalid votes raised by former leader Lee Nak-yeon, he replied, "I believe the party will handle it well according to common sense, principles, and party rules and regulations." Regarding the possibility of Lee Nak-yeon’s refusal to accept the results, he dismissed it by saying, "The people and party members will show the way."
