Won Hee-ryong Advances to Top 4 "Reflecting the Aspirations of Jeju Residents"

Won Hee-ryong Advances to Top 4 "Reflecting the Aspirations of Jeju Residents" Former Jeju Governor Won Hee-ryong is staging a one-person protest at Yangdong Market in Gwangju Metropolitan City to support small business owners affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Chang-won] Former Jeju Governor Won Hee-ryong was included among the final four candidates who passed the second cut-off in the People Power Party primary announced on the 8th, leading to strong public opinion in Jeju that this result reflects the aspirations of Jeju residents.

The second primary of the People Power Party attracted attention on who among Choi Jae-hyung, Ha Tae-kyung, Hwang Kyo-ahn, and Won Hee-ryong would pass the primary in fourth place, behind the first-place vote-getter.

Overall, it is widely believed that increasing the party sentiment reflection ratio to 30% during the second cut-off and Won’s sharp analysis of the recent Seongnam Daejang-dong scandal, earning him the image of the ‘Daejang-dong top instructor,’ worked relatively in his favor.

However, according to Mr. A, former head of the People Power Party Jeju Provincial Party Committee, “There was a cautious analysis that Jeju residents, thinking that he is still a figure from Jeju and should be included in the final four, influenced party members and Jeju residents to cast their votes overwhelmingly for former Governor Won.”

Additionally, consecutive declarations of support for former Governor Won in Jeju are also analyzed to have contributed to his entry into the top four.

Last month, all five Jeju Provincial Assembly members affiliated with the People Power Party declared their support for former Governor Won, and on the 5th, support declarations continued from the Jeju Federation of Youth Associations, Jeju City, and Seogwipo City Federation of Youth Associations.

Meanwhile, Won Hee-ryong’s upward momentum in Jeju is expected to continue in the People Power Party’s final primary.

According to a People Power Party Jeju Provincial Party official, “Jeju residents’ voting tendencies consider the unique Gwandeong culture, including academic, regional, and blood ties. With Won Hee-ryong entering the final candidates, party members and residents in Jeju are unlikely to easily shift their support to other People Power Party candidates, so Won’s rising trend in Jeju is expected to continue.”
