Hyosung Heavy Industries Secures Internationally Recognized Qualification for Korea's Only STATCOM

[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Hyosung Heavy Industries recently announced on the 7th that its Changwon plant's STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) testing laboratory has become the first in Korea to receive international accreditation as a testing institution from the Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (KOLAS).

KOLAS, under the National Institute of Technology and Standards of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, officially recognizes the testing capabilities of institutions in specific fields by evaluating their environment, quality systems, and technical competence according to international standards (IEC 62927). KOLAS-accredited test reports hold the same validity as those issued by testing institutions in 104 countries, including the United States, China, and Japan, which have mutual recognition agreements through the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC).

STATCOM is a shunt-type reactive power compensation device that maintains voltage stability by supplying and absorbing reactive power on transmission lines, thereby enhancing the stability of the power system and power quality. It is especially effective for power generation from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power, which can fluctuate rapidly depending on weather conditions.

Hyosung Heavy Industries leads the domestic market with outstanding technology, supplying the world's largest single-unit STATCOM equipment to Korea Electric Power Corporation's Sinchungju and Sinyoungju substations.

With this KOLAS accreditation, Hyosung Heavy Industries has gained significant recognition for its global-level quality and evaluation technology. In particular, as Hyosung Heavy Industries focuses on the global STATCOM market, it is expected to accelerate its expansion into untapped overseas markets such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE in the Middle East, where demand for STATCOM is rapidly increasing due to the rising share of renewable energy generation, as well as the Americas, Southwest Asia, and Southeast Asia.
