AWS to Support $40 Million Over 3 Years to Promote Health Equity Yoon Jung-won, Head of Public Sector at AWS Korea


[Asia Economy Reporter Buaeri] Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced on the 5th that it will invest $40 million (47.5 billion KRW) over three years to support client companies working to improve the health of socially vulnerable groups.


On the same day, Yoon Jung-won, head of AWS Korea's public sector, held a press briefing and unveiled the "Health Equity Improvement (HEI)" program. AWS explained that it is increasing access to health and social services for underserved communities.


At the event, AWS also revealed client case studies. Samsung Seoul Hospital has begun creating AI models and building an AWS-scalable platform.


In the case of Moderna, they have been using an AWS-based research engine for mRNA vaccine development. Utilizing AWS, they rapidly design research experiments and automate laboratory and manufacturing processes.


Additionally, cases of medical startups using AWS were disclosed. Medical AI startup Lunit provides AI-based image analysis software using AWS. This software detects lung cancer, breast cancer, and other chest abnormalities with 96-99% accuracy. It is used by Korea's Seoul National University Hospital and other medical institutions in Mexico, Italy, France, and Portugal.


AWS collaborated with the Indian government to participate in the largest vaccination plan through CoWIN, a nationwide vaccine registration and scheduling system. Over 850 million vaccines have been administered, and the company expects that ultimately more than 1 billion people will use this system. On the 17th of last month, they successfully administered 22.5 million vaccinations in one day.


CEO Yoon added, "We also plan to provide direct support to Korea's renowned healthcare startups aiming to expand overseas."
