On the 5th, Ahn Kyu-baek, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, announced based on data received from the Defense Acquisition Program Administration and the Army Headquarters that dozens of cases of foreign substances have been reported annually in army unit military supplies since 2016 up to recently.
So far this year, 15 cases have been confirmed, including a frog found in napa cabbage kimchi in June. The cases were recorded as 48 in 2016, 35 in 2017, 23 in 2018, 30 in 2019, and 34 last year.
Foreign substances mostly included hair, vinyl, and plastic fragments, while some cases involved wires, insects, frogs, and even coliform bacteria and kitchen knives.
However, the military supplies from the relevant companies have continued to this day. Ahn pointed out that one military supply company, which received corrective actions after 22 foreign substance detections in the past five years, signed a new contract worth 9.7 billion won this year.
Ahn said, "A 'one strike out' system must be promptly introduced so that companies that neglect and do not reflect even when foreign substances are detected can never participate in military supplies again."
