[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suhwan] As the largest-ever incursion into Taiwan's Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) by Chinese military aircraft has occurred, escalating tensions between Taiwan and China to a peak, Taiwan has emphasized that it will fight to the end if war breaks out with China.
According to local Taiwanese media on the 5th, Wu Chao-hsieh, Taiwan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated this in a pre-recorded interview with Australia's public broadcaster ABC aired the previous day.
Minister Wu warned, "If China attacks Taiwan, they will also suffer enormous damage."
He added that Taiwan is currently preparing for war with China and hopes to exchange information with democratic partner countries such as Australia to respond to such a situation.
He emphasized that Taiwan must develop asymmetric capabilities and that if war occurs, a completely new paradigm different from the existing one is needed to defeat China.
Earlier, following the mid-last-month US-Australia foreign and defense ministers' '2+2 meeting (AUSMIN)', the joint press conference mentioned that the US and Australia regard Taiwan as a critical partner and expressed their intention to strengthen relations.
Additionally, former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott is scheduled to attend the upcoming Weisan Forum on the 8th.
Meanwhile, Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, the agency responsible for China affairs, pointed out that the large-scale daily incursions of Chinese military aircraft into airspace around Taiwan seriously undermine the current peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait. It urged China to cease these unpeaceful and irresponsible provocative acts.
Su Tzu-yun, a researcher at Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense think tank, the Institute for National Defense and Security Research (INDSR), recently expressed the view that the recent Chinese military aircraft incursions into Taiwan's ADIZ are a reaction to joint exercises involving US and UK aircraft carriers and Japanese warships in the northeast of Taiwan.
