Former Lawmaker Min Kyung-wook Appears at Police on Charges of Holding Illegal Assembly

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] Former Future United Party lawmaker Min Kyung-wook, accused of holding illegal assemblies, appeared before the police.

According to the police on the 5th, the Seocho Police Station in Seoul summoned Min for investigation this morning on charges including violation of the Assembly and Demonstration Act and the Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act.

The 4·15 National Struggle Headquarters Against Election Fraud (Guktubon), led by former lawmaker Min, is accused of holding illegal assemblies every week for over a year near Gangnam Station on Subway Line 2 and other areas in Seocho District. The group continues protests demanding a fact-finding investigation, claiming that the results of the 21st general election were manipulated to favor the ruling Democratic Party of Korea.

Guktubon claims that their actions are not illegal as they are conducted in the form of 'one-person protests.' However, the police judged that multiple people gathering in the same space with the same purpose constitutes an illegal assembly and launched an investigation last month into Min and two other Guktubon officials.
