[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suhwan] As Facebook and Instagram experienced simultaneous global outages, the Netflix drama "Squid Game" has once again become a hot topic.
Photos parodying key scenes from Squid Game are spreading on social networking services (SNS) to mock the Facebook blackout incident.
Earlier, on the 4th (local time), Facebook experienced a service outage, causing other services owned by Facebook, such as Instagram and WhatsApp, to go down as well.
The outage was resolved after about six hours, but it caused significant inconvenience to millions of users worldwide.
Meanwhile, CNET reported that various photos parodying Squid Game have been posted and are trending on SNS.
Since its release on Netflix last month, Squid Game has explosively gained popularity, ranking number one in 83 countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, for the first time in Netflix history. Netflix also stated that Squid Game is expected to record the highest number of viewers in Netflix history.
Immediately after the Facebook blackout incident, Netflix's official Twitter account posted a photo parodying the "Mugunghwa Flower Has Bloomed" scene from the drama.
In the drama, when the protagonist Seong Gi-hun is about to fall during the "Mugunghwa Flower Has Bloomed" game, the migrant worker Ali catches Gi-hun from behind.
Netflix parodied this scene by posting a photo showing Twitter catching everyone who is about to fall.
This implies that Twitter, the only service accessible during Facebook's outage, is saving people.
In response, Twitter's official company account also replied directly to Netflix's parody post and uploaded a photo parodying Squid Game.
This post features the protagonist Gi-hun playing the Dalgona game, licking the Dalgona candy to extract the umbrella shape. In the photo, "we," representing Twitter, is likened to the umbrella-shaped Dalgona, and Gi-hun is depicted as "all users."
Additionally, numerous people are spreading posts parodying the Facebook incident using scenes from Squid Game.
One Twitter user posted a scene from the drama featuring an invitation card to Squid Game, along with the message, "WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram are all down. Now it's time to (participate in Squid Game)."
Another user parodied the "Mugunghwa Flower Has Bloomed" game scene, comparing the participants who died in the drama to the Facebook services that caused the outage.
Another post showed a scene from the drama where a participant is surprised, accompanied by the phrase "OMG," meaning "Oh my God," and a parody mocking Facebook's connectivity issues using the Dalgona game was also posted.
CNET reported, "As Squid Game is drawing global attention, parodies are also spreading," stating that Squid Game is being summoned in relation to the Facebook incident.
