[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Volvo Cars Korea announced the official domestic launch of the new mid-size premium SUV, the XC60, and stated that customer deliveries will begin on the 19th.

The new XC60, first revealed domestically on the 14th of last month, surpassed 2,000 new pre-orders within just two weeks.

Since its debut in 2009 as the brand's first urban SUV, the XC60 has become Volvo Cars' best-selling model, leading SUV trends with over 1.68 million units sold globally as of last year.

The new model, introduced about four years after the second-generation model launched in 2017, features updated design details, an innovative connectivity and digital service package, and new advanced safety technologies.

The exterior of the new XC60 carries forward the confident styling, including LED headlights known as ‘Thor's Hammer,’ while adding a modern sensibility through six detailed changes.

The front features a radiator grille integrating a 3D-shaped Iron Mark following the 90 cluster, along with a new bumper and air intake design, and a chrome bar emphasizing the wide body.

Infotainment Service Developed with Tmap and 30 Billion KRW Investment

The new XC60 is the first model in Korea to introduce a new digital service package based on Google's Android Automotive OS.

The core of this is an integrated SKT infotainment service developed with a 30 billion KRW investment in collaboration with Tmap Mobility for the Korean market. It combines Korea's top-quality navigation Tmap, AI platform NUGU, a music platform based on user preferences, FLO, providing a personalized and innovative connectivity service.

Especially, by saying ‘Aria’ inside the car, users can control vehicle functions such as interior temperature, heated seats, and ionizer; set destinations and waypoints, get nearby attraction guidance for navigation; make calls and send texts to contacts stored on the smartphone; enjoy entertainment features like music recommendations and playlist playback based on preferences; check weather, news, and various information; and control smart home devices such as lighting, air conditioning, and robot vacuum cleaners through NUGU smart home.

The new XC60 is equipped with the latest ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) platform consisting of radar, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors.

To process more and more accurate information, the radar + camera integrated module located at the top of the windshield has been separated, embedding the radar into the front grille Iron Mark, and relocating the ASDM (Active Safety Domain Master), which analyzes and processes collected data, to the rear.

This enables advanced safety technologies such as City Safety, which detects vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists on the road and supports emergency braking and collision avoidance in case of accident risk; Pilot Assist, which maintains distance from the vehicle ahead and assists steering to keep the lane center; Run-off Road Mitigation; and Oncoming Lane Mitigation, which helps avoid collisions with vehicles approaching in the opposite lane, all provided as standard.

Three Hybrid Powertrains Considering Safety on the Road and the Planet

The new XC60 powertrains are launched with three options: mild hybrid (B5/B6) and plug-in hybrid (T8), based on low-emission gasoline engine technology, combined with an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive (AWD) system.

The new standard B5 engine is a gasoline-based mild hybrid engine delivering a maximum output of 250 horsepower (5700 rpm) and maximum torque of 35.7 kgm (1800?4800 rpm). The B6 engine, emphasizing driving pleasure, produces 300 horsepower (5400 rpm) and 42.8 kgm of torque (2100?4800 rpm), accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in just 6.2 to 6.7 seconds (depending on the model).

The high-performance plug-in hybrid T8 Twin Engine powertrain consists of a supercharged and turbocharged inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine, a 65 kW electric motor, and an 11.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. It delivers a combined maximum output of 405 horsepower (318 hp from the gasoline engine + 87 hp from the motor) and maximum torque of 40.8 kgm (2200?5400 rpm), offering powerful driving performance. It can travel up to 33 km in pure electric mode on a single charge.

The standard head-up display (HUD) allows drivers to check driving information provided by Tmap, and the 12.3-inch driver information display, which provides key performance and vehicle status information, has been upgraded with enhanced graphics.

The domestic sales trims of the new XC60 are divided into five categories based on exterior and interior design, wheel size, interior decoration finish, seat type, Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system, 360-degree camera, and other specifications.

They are sold as B5 Momentum (61.9 million KRW), B5 Inscription (68 million KRW), B6 R-Design Edition (69 million KRW / scheduled for domestic release), B6 Inscription (72 million KRW), and T8 Inscription (83.7 million KRW).

Additionally, the industry-leading 5-year or 100,000 km free warranty period and consumables replacement service are provided as standard.
