"IoT to Create Safe Communities" LG Uplus Signs Smart Safety Care MOU with Dongguk University

[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] LG Uplus announced on the 5th that it has signed an industry-academic cooperation agreement with Dongguk University to establish a smart safety care system.

Smart Safety Care refers to the establishment and operation of a security management system for public safety, such as improving the quality of life for socially vulnerable groups like the elderly by utilizing Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and devices, managing cultural heritage, and tracking missing persons.

LG Uplus and Dongguk University will establish a provisional “Smart Safety Care Research Center” and build an industry-academic cooperation cluster to collaborate in three areas: ▲ demonstration projects for safety care of the elderly and socially vulnerable groups ▲ operation of safety testbeds for public facilities in local communities ▲ development of next-generation security and safety platforms.

LG Uplus plans to build an integrated platform that can manage real-time safety situations for elderly care facilities and conduct demonstration project cooperation within the year. By utilizing advanced ICT technologies such as radar sensors, it will immediately detect emergency situations like falls in bathrooms or on stairs and identify the presence and location of elderly individuals to prevent safety accidents in advance.

On the Dongguk University campus, a danger zone entry detection service will be provided to prevent safety accidents such as falls from building rooftops. Without blocking rooftop access, AI-based IoT sensors will detect and alert about danger signals in advance.

Furthermore, LG Uplus and Dongguk University plan to link radar sensors and CCTV to eliminate blind spots within facilities and utilize the system for finding missing persons such as dementia patients, preventing cultural heritage theft, and detecting dangerous situations in child care facilities.

Wonseok Cho, Executive Vice President and Head of the Corporate New Business Group at LG Uplus, said, “LG Uplus will develop the industry-academic cooperation model with Dongguk University and continue to expand services in areas requiring safety such as local communities, public facilities, and security safety.”
