Pohang City Leads Regional Economic Revitalization with Formation of 4 Small and Medium Enterprise Cooperatives
Mayor Lee Kang-deok Agrees to Support National Funded 'Fulfillment Establishment Pilot Project'

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Lee Kang-deok, mayor of Pohang City, received a plaque of appreciation from the Korea Federation of SMEs for his efforts to revitalize local small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) cooperatives.
The Korea Federation of SMEs announced on the 5th that on the 30th of last month, its chairman visited Pohang City Hall and presented a plaque of appreciation to Mayor Lee Kang-deok for his efforts in enacting the "Pohang City Ordinance for the Promotion and Support of SME Cooperatives."
Following the amendment of the Small and Medium Enterprise Cooperative Act in November 2019, which established grounds for local government support for cooperatives, as of September 2021, related ordinances have been enacted in 16 metropolitan local governments and 36 basic local governments.
In Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, Pohang City was the first to enact such an ordinance on August 3, 2021.
The plaque presentation ceremony was attended by △ Kim Ki-moon, chairman of the Korea Federation of SMEs △ Lee Han-wook, vice chairman of the Korea Federation of SMEs △ Kim Kang-seok, chairman of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk SME Federation of the Korea Federation of SMEs △ Kwon Cheol-jin, chairman of the Pohang Supermarket Cooperative △ Bae Gye-hwan, chairman of the Gyeongbuk Photo Album Cooperative, among others.
Currently, Pohang City has four SME cooperatives formed, including supermarkets, gwamegi (half-dried Pacific saury) business, car wash and maintenance, and photo album printing. A total of 394 cooperative members work together to contribute to the revitalization of the local economy.
Kim Ki-moon, chairman of the Korea Federation of SMEs, expressed his gratitude for Pohang City being the first in the Gyeongbuk region to enact such an ordinance.
Chairman Kim said, “We hope for Pohang City’s active cooperation and support so that local SMEs centered on regional cooperatives can contribute to economic revitalization.”
Mayor Lee Kang-deok of Pohang City promised, “In the future, Pohang City will actively cooperate with the national government’s pilot project to establish a fulfillment system supporting an online distribution service linking consumers, stores, and logistics centers, which is planned by the Pohang Supermarket Cooperative.”
