Selected for Bucheon Gogang Area Urban Regeneration New Deal Project... Accelerating Seed Money Project until 2025 Conceptual Plan for Urban Regeneration New Deal Project in Gojang Area, Bucheon [Provided by Bucheon City]

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Bucheon City in Gyeonggi Province will accelerate the urban regeneration New Deal project in the Gogang-dong area from next year until 2025.

The city announced on the 2nd that with the Gogang area being finally selected in the 2021 Urban Regeneration New Deal project competition hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, a total of about 93.9 billion KRW will be invested, including private investment projects (78.9 billion KRW) and seed money projects (14.4 billion KRW).

The Gogang area urban regeneration New Deal project, under the vision of the "[Bronze Age Prehistoric Site] Goriul, Youth Movement Project," was selected in the "General Neighborhood Type" category, aiming to revitalize the resident community and local alley markets.

Gogang-dong was a major residential area in the early development of Bucheon City, but it is currently experiencing population decline and aging due to the development of new towns in Sang-dong and Jung-dong, and after the designation and cancellation of the New Town, it faces issues such as aging buildings and lack of parking facilities.

Accordingly, Bucheon City has analyzed the historical culture and usable spatial facilities that Gogang-dong holds as urban regeneration potential and has planned and promoted the Gogang area urban regeneration New Deal project.

With this competition selection, the city plans to invest a total of about 14.4 billion KRW in seed money projects over four years from this year to 2025, including 7.2 billion KRW in national funds, 1.44 billion KRW in provincial funds, 1 billion KRW from the Housing and Urban Guarantee Corporation (HUG) fund, and 4.76 billion KRW in city funds, in an area of about 180,000㎡ around Gogang-dong lot 384.

With the goals of creating culture where history and nature coexist, establishing a mutually prosperous village economy base, and building a safe and convenient village, the project plans to implement initiatives such as ▲Prehistoric Forest Cultural Specialization ▲Youth & Re-Youth Center establishment ▲Goriul community revitalization ▲Goriul commercial district revitalization ▲Economic experiment Gorium House establishment ▲Goriul housing ▲Goriul safe road creation to breathe new life into the Gogang area.

First, by making the prehistoric site park a landmark rich in green space, opportunities for citizens to experience forests and culture will be expanded. Additionally, village film festivals and photo exhibitions linked to existing festivals such as the Goriul Prehistoric Culture Festival and Azalea Festival will be held, and a Prehistoric Culture Story Discovery Group will be nurtured to promote prehistoric culture.

The Youth & Re-Youth Center will be established as a cultural and welfare hub facility linking community integrated care (village care center) and cultural projects. Through the Goriul community revitalization project, the capabilities of local residents will be strengthened, and support for developing a community platform will be provided.

To lay the foundation for a mutually prosperous village economy, the walking environment of the Goriul Cave Market will be improved, and specialized products and BI development will be promoted to enhance competitiveness. In particular, the economic experiment Gorium House will be created as a space linked to village economic activities and startups such as village cafes, village restaurants, home repair, and workshops, aiming to discover and nurture sustainable village economic organizations.

Alongside this, in cooperation with Bucheon Urban Corporation's "Neighborhood Management Office" and Gyeonggi Province's "Happy Village Management Office," old houses will be repaired, and the school route in front of Gogang Elementary School will be developed into a clean and safe road with traffic safety facilities and convenience facilities installed.

Jang Deokcheon, mayor of Bucheon City, stated, "We will do our best to promote urban regeneration projects utilizing the regional assets of the Gogang area to strengthen regional identity and revitalize the village through village landmark creation and improvement of commercial district environments."
