[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Sumi] On the 2nd, Lee Jun-seok, leader of the People Power Party, expressed gratitude for the resolute decision for regime change as independent lawmaker Kwak Sang-do announced his resignation from the National Assembly.
On the same day, Lee said on his Facebook, "I will always hold respect for Representative Kwak's decision and a feeling of apology for not being able to do more as party leader, and continue in politics with this mindset."
He continued, "I ask our party members and supporters to follow Representative Kwak Sang-do's resolve and more strongly point out the Democratic Party's refusal of the special prosecutor."
He emphasized, "The Democratic Party must promptly accept the special prosecutor to ensure an unreserved investigation," adding, "The side refusing the special prosecutor is the culprit."
Representative Kwak held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Office at 10 a.m. that day and announced his resignation from the assembly. It was six days after leaving the People Power Party.
Earlier, Representative Kwak became the center of controversy as his son, who worked at Hwacheon Daeyu, received 5 billion won in severance pay and other benefits.

Regarding this, Representative Kwak said, "Reports about me and my son have continued daily," and "Regarding this matter, any statement I make would only cause greater misunderstanding and distrust will not be lifted, making it difficult to continue as a lawmaker, so I resign."
He said, "It is said that Hwacheon Daeyu earned more than 700 billion won in profits from the Daejang-dong development project, which candidate Lee Jae-myung personally designed the profit structure for, and Lee's close aide Yoo Dong-gyu, former head of planning at Seongnam Urban Development Corporation, has been arrested and is under investigation," adding, "The mastermind behind the Daejang-dong development project and to whom the 700 billion won belongs will soon be revealed."
He added, "Furthermore, the nature of the performance severance pay that my son received and whether I was involved in the Daejang-dong development project or Hwacheon Daeyu will be revealed through the investigation."
Representative Kwak then requested a special prosecutor for a fair investigation. He said, "Since the top officials of the prosecution and police are composed with a pro-regime bias, I earnestly hope for an investigation through a special prosecutor to ensure thorough and fair investigation."
