Establishment of Mid- to Long-Term Strategy for Semiconductor Industry Development
[Asia Economy Reporter La Young-cheol] Gyeonggi Province announced the 'Gyeonggi Province Semiconductor Industry Support Achievements and Innovation Strategy' to leap into the world's largest cutting-edge semiconductor industry hub by 2030.
Jeong Do-young, Director of Economic Planning at the provincial government, held an online press conference at the northern government office building on the 29th and said, "Gyeonggi Province has a concentrated semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment (SoBuJang) supply chain structure (64% nationwide), including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix," adding, "It is the de facto semiconductor production and technology center accounting for 82.8% of the domestic semiconductor industry's added value."
He continued, "We will strive to make Gyeonggi Province the global center of the semiconductor industry through systematic cultivation of the semiconductor sector."
The province plans to establish and implement a 'Gyeonggi Province Semiconductor Industry Mid- to Long-Term Development Strategy' aimed at strengthening the semiconductor industry structure, promoting fair competition, and fostering co-growth from a mid- to long-term perspective.
The 'Mid- to Long-Term Development Strategy' consists of three main goals: ▲becoming a global hub for semiconductor SoBuJang technology development ▲securing top-level SoBuJang technological competitiveness ▲building a sustainable cooperative network system.
Accordingly, the province plans to gradually establish the 'Gyeonggi Province Semiconductor SoBuJang Public Convergence Platform,' an open public platform equipped with functions such as technology innovation foundation, R&D, and networking in the semiconductor and SoBuJang fields, in Suwon and Yongin by 2025.
From next year to 2025, the first phase, an element technology testbed called the 'Internalization Change Certification Center and Joint Equipment Development Zone,' will be built in Suwon, followed by the second phase, a mass production verification testbed, to be constructed in the Yongin semiconductor specialized complex from 2024 to 2025.
The province plans to promote a 'joint technology development (R&D) support project for demand (upstream industries, large corporations) and supply companies (downstream industries, SMEs)' to enhance the technological level in the semiconductor and SoBuJang sectors.
Based on this mid- to long-term strategy, the province aims to nurture 'global unicorn companies in the semiconductor SoBuJang industry' and become the world's number one 'largest cutting-edge semiconductor industry hub' in fields such as memory semiconductor production, semiconductor foundry, and system semiconductor production after 2030.
