[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Chun-hee] On the 29th, the number of new domestic COVID-19 cases reached a record high for a Wednesday at 2,885 cases, continuing the resurgence of the 4th wave.
The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency’s Central Disease Control Headquarters reported that as of midnight, the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases increased by 2,885 from the previous day to 308,725. The sources of the new cases were 2,859 local transmissions and 26 imported cases. The record high for a Wednesday indicates the ongoing spread of the 4th wave.
Among the locally transmitted cases, 2,190 cases (76.6%) were reported in the Seoul metropolitan area: 1,050 in Seoul, 989 in Gyeonggi, and 151 in Incheon.
Non-metropolitan cases totaled 669. By region, 108 cases were confirmed in Daegu amid continued spread linked to gatherings among foreign acquaintances. Other regions reported the following cases: 52 in Busan, 28 in Gwangju, 28 in Daejeon, 27 in Ulsan, 10 in Sejong, 20 in Gangwon, 83 in Chungbuk, 75 in Chungnam, 41 in Jeonbuk, 23 in Jeonnam, 88 in Gyeongbuk, 81 in Gyeongnam, and 5 in Jeju.
There were 26 imported cases, with 9 detected during quarantine and 17 identified in the community. Among them, 6 were Korean nationals and 20 were foreigners.
Meanwhile, as of midnight, 256,982 people received new COVID-19 vaccinations. The cumulative number of first-dose vaccinations reached 38,769,866. The vaccination rate is 75.5% of the total population and 87.8% of the population aged 18 and over. The number of fully vaccinated individuals increased by 689,322 from the previous day to 24,642,525. The second-dose vaccination rate is 48.0% of the total population and 55.8% of those aged 18 and over.
