[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Gwangju Metropolitan City’s efforts to attract investment for an advanced logistics center, which have been underway since last year, have finally borne fruit.

On the 28th, according to Gwangju City, Coupang Corp. held a groundbreaking ceremony for the ‘Coupang Gwangju Advanced Logistics Center’ at the Pyeongdong 3rd Industrial Complex that morning.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by about 40 people, including Lee Yong-seop, Mayor of Gwangju, and Park Dae-jun, CEO of Coupang’s New Business Division.

Coupang, a leading company in the e-commerce industry, signed a ‘Gwangju Win-Win Job New Deal Business Agreement’ with Gwangju City last September to invest about 200 billion KRW to build an advanced logistics center in the Pyeongdong 3rd Industrial Complex and create about 2,000 jobs.

This investment by Coupang is the result of Gwangju City’s dedicated efforts to attract investment.

Following the recent construction of the first phase of the refrigerated and frozen warehouse, the second phase will involve building a logistics center equipped with a state-of-the-art system with a total floor area of 168,132㎡ (approximately 50,000 pyeong) in the Pyeongdong 3rd Industrial Complex.

Scheduled for completion in the first half of 2023, the Coupang Gwangju Advanced Logistics Center is expected to become the largest logistics center in the Honam region, creating stable local jobs for more than 2,000 people.

Additionally, it is expected to have a significant investment inducement effect within the region by prioritizing the employment of local residents, especially women and middle-aged workers, and realizing the value of co-growth with local small and medium-sized enterprises and small business owners.

Park Dae-jun, CEO of Coupang’s New Business Division, said, “Thanks to Gwangju City creating a business-friendly environment, we have begun construction of the Coupang Gwangju Logistics Center, which will enable us to provide better ‘Rocket Delivery’ services not only to customers in the Honam region but also in the southern region.” He added, “We will serve as a foundation for mutual growth with the local community through revitalizing the regional economy, creating quality jobs, and supporting excellent small business owners in the Honam area.”

Lee Yong-seop, Mayor of Gwangju, said, “Gwangju City will actively support policies and systems to create a stable working environment and sustainable employment market, realizing a labor-respecting and business-friendly city of labor-management coexistence.” He added, “Furthermore, we will work together to ensure that Coupang grows into a global e-commerce company while coexisting with local small and medium-sized enterprises and small business owners.”
