"Most Watched on Netflix in Majority of Countries"
Leading for Four Consecutive Days in FlixPatrol Rankings
Ted Sarandos, Co-CEO and Chief Content Officer (CCO) of Netflix, praised the Korean-produced series "Squid Game." On the 27th (local time) at the "Code Conference 2021" held in California, USA, he stated, "'Squid Game' is the most-watched show on Netflix in the majority of countries," adding, "If the trend continues, it could become the most successful title not only among Netflix's non-English content but across all works."
In fact, "Squid Game" continues to prove the rising status of Korean content. According to FlixPatrol, an online video service (OTT) ranking site, it has held the top spot in the Netflix TV program world ranking for four consecutive days with 822 points. It widened the gap to 114 points ahead of the British drama "Sex Education" (708 points). It was the most-watched show in 76 countries including the United States, Netflix's largest market, as well as Germany, Australia, Japan, Mexico, Canada, France, Argentina, Thailand, Vietnam, Brazil, Belgium, Denmark, Croatia, Egypt, Norway, Spain, Switzerland, and more. The popularity gained in Asia and North America is spreading to Europe. Except for India (3rd place), it ranked first or second in all countries.
There have also been continuous praises for the storytelling and strength of Korean creators. The prominent American entertainment media "Variety" referred to the characters, saying, "It simultaneously expresses Korea's unique sensibility and universal emotions of people worldwide." Bloomberg reported, "Korean creators have proven their ability to produce content that can compete with Hollywood in the U.S. through 'Squid Game.'"
"Squid Game" is a series about life losers who participate in a mysterious survival game with a prize of 45.6 billion KRW, risking their lives in extreme games. The title "Squid Game" refers to a game played on a squid-shaped drawing consisting of circle, triangle, and square shapes. The attacker wins by breaking through the defense and entering the circle, which corresponds to the squid's head. The director is Hwang Dong-hyuk, who directed films such as "The Fortress," "Miss Granny," and "Silenced." The cast includes Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Oh Young-soo, Wi Ha-joon, Jung Ho-yeon, Heo Sung-tae, Anupam, and Kim Joo-ryoung.
