[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] A female internet broadcaster (BJ) in her 20s, accused of deliberately approaching male fans by exploiting their affection and embezzling tens of millions of won, was sentenced to 8 months in prison in the appellate court.

The Daejeon District Court's 2nd Criminal Division (Presiding Judge Nam Dong-hee) sentenced the female BJ A (25) and her boyfriend B (25), who were indicted on fraud charges, to 8 months in prison and 2 years of probation, respectively. The court also ordered each of them to perform 120 hours of community service.

Previously, the first trial court sentenced A and B to 8 months in prison each, stating, "This was a planned crime carried out by exploiting the victim's affection, and the nature of the crime is very serious."

Both the prosecution and the defendants appealed the first trial's verdict. The appellate court ruled, "It is necessary to impose strict responsibility as the defendants exploited the victim's psychological state to embezzle money."

However, the appellate court explained the sentencing rationale by considering that "the defendants confessed to the crime and showed remorse, repaid 25 million won to the victim during the first trial, and fully repaid the remaining 55 million won by the time of this appeal."

A is accused of deceiving the victim C on May 29 of last year at her home in Jung-gu, Daejeon, by claiming she urgently needed money at home and embezzling 80 million won.

Investigations revealed that A borrowed the money to repay her boyfriend B's personal debts at the time. However, it was confirmed that she had no income or assets and had no intention or ability to repay. They deliberately obtained the money by exploiting the fact that C had affection for A. The total amount received was 80 million won, of which A obtained 10 million won and B obtained 70 million won.
