[Asia Economy Reporter Kim So-young] Jeong Mi-kyung, a Supreme Council member of the same party, expressed disappointment regarding Gwak Sang-do, an independent lawmaker (formerly of the People Power Party), who left the party amid controversy over his son's 5 billion KRW retirement bonus from Hwacheon Daeyu.
On the 27th, Supreme Council member Jeong appeared on YTN Radio's "Lee Dong-hyung's News Face-off" and said, "I have been at the forefront of speaking out about President Moon Jae-in's children's issues more than anyone else until now," adding, "(Lawmaker Gwak) should resign from his position and then undergo investigation, but I am disappointed because he has not done so."
She stated, "It is simply unacceptable from a common-sense perspective. The retirement bonus is unreasonable," and continued, "When I went to the emergency Supreme Council meeting on the 26th, Gwak's withdrawal letter from the party was submitted. I honestly thought it was a resignation letter from the National Assembly. I thought he would resign."
She added, "In the case of former lawmaker Yoon Hee-sook, although it was her father's (real estate suspicion) case, she resigned from her position and said she would undergo investigation," and "Therefore, I thought Gwak would resign as well, but it was not a resignation letter but a withdrawal letter, so I was a bit surprised."
When asked by the host whether she thinks it would be better for him to resign from his position, she answered yes, saying, "The public does not think that public institutions gave money (support funds) to Moon Jun-yong and bought his works because of him. They think it was because he is the president's son," and "Likewise, they will not think that the 5 billion KRW received by Gwak's son was given to him personally. They will think it was given because of Gwak."
Earlier, on the 26th, lawmaker Gwak submitted his withdrawal letter to the Daegu City branch of the People Power Party amid controversy over his son, a Hwacheon Daeyu employee, receiving a 5 billion KRW retirement bonus.
