[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] The Real Estate and Construction Reform Headquarters of the Citizens' Coalition for Economic Justice, which had been pointing out issues such as the skyrocketing housing prices during the Moon Jae-in administration, has been disbanded.

According to the Citizens' Coalition for Economic Justice on the 27th, the Standing Executive Committee held a meeting at the end of last month and decided to abolish the Real Estate Reform Headquarters. Accordingly, the Real Estate Reform Headquarters, which was launched in 2019, will disappear after two years.

The Real Estate Reform Headquarters had consistently held press conferences to highlight issues such as the surge in housing prices under the current government. It criticized the land speculation scandal involving employees of the Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) and pointed out that the rental housing prices of the Seoul Housing Corporation (SH) were set too high, urging the disclosure of construction costs.

The Citizens' Coalition for Economic Justice plans to subdivide teams to research policies and propose pledges for the upcoming presidential election. Under the Policy Bureau, there will be a Land and Housing Team, and within the Urban Reform Center, there will be a National Land Policy Team and an Urban Policy Team. The national construction sector will be operated as a separate organization.

The background of this decision is said to consider that the Real Estate Reform Headquarters had focused mainly on apartment and land price issues.

However, some view that a major reason for this decision was the departure of former head Kim Heon-dong, who led the Real Estate Reform Headquarters, after he recently applied for the SH Corporation president position. Kim had led key real estate policy proposals within the headquarters, such as the disclosure of construction costs and the implementation of price ceiling systems.

Kim Heon-dong applied for the SH Corporation president position last month but was rejected; however, after the recruitment was canceled, he reapplied this month.

Kim, a civic activist who has been active in the Citizens' Coalition for Economic Justice since 2000, established the "Apartment Price Bubble Removal Headquarters" in 2004, proposing the disclosure of construction costs and improvements to the land supply system.
