[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Residents of Yangnim-dong, Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (District Mayor Kim Byung-nae) have started creating jobs using the profits earned from making and selling pecan walnut bread, a representative local delicacy of Yangnim-dong, and operating a village bookstore.
On the 27th, according to Nam-gu, the 'Yangnim-dong Village Management Social Cooperative Founding General Assembly' was held at the Yangnim-dong Administrative Welfare Center in the afternoon, attended by about 30 people including the social cooperative founders, District Mayor Kim Byung-nae, local council members, and officials related to the Urban Regeneration New Deal project.
The Yangnim-dong Village Management Social Cooperative is a community-oriented public cooperative that provides jobs to local residents by generating profits through utilizing the residents' community center, created as a shared facility during the urban regeneration project, and the village bookstore space established near Penguin Village and the craft-specialized street.
First, the residents of Yangnim-dong formed a village business team to revitalize the alleyway commercial district, and prepared a space on the second floor of the residents' community center for the production and distribution of pecan walnut bread. They plan to manufacture and sell pecan walnut bread as gifts and snacks targeting young people in their 20s and 30s, tourists, and families with children.
The profits generated here are expected to be used for hiring staff to expand the sales network of pecan walnut bread.
Along with this, they will also operate a village bookstore that functions as a bookstore where various books can be found, and hosts diverse events such as reading clubs, cultural and exhibition events while enjoying coffee.
The village bookstore is expected to be set up near Penguin Village, covering an area of about 30 to 50 pyeong (approximately 99 to 165 square meters), and will operate tour programs for tourists and Yangnim picnic performance programs in connection with social economy enterprises located in Yangnim-dong.
Additionally, to generate profits for the village bookstore, they plan to sell books, beverages, and desserts to help create jobs for residents.
A representative of the Yangnim-dong Village Management Social Cooperative stated, “We plan to apply for approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for the establishment of the cooperative in early October. We will do our best in establishing and operating the cooperative to achieve public interest goals such as providing jobs to local residents through village projects.”
