[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] SK Siltron announced on the 27th that it has additionally obtained the Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL) Gold certification from the global safety certification company UL (Underwriters Laboratories).
The Zero Waste to Landfill certification is a system established by UL, the first safety certification company in the United States, which quantifies the recycling rate by excluding non-recyclable waste from the total waste generated annually at a business site and awards certification grades to sites with excellent recycling rates. The grades are divided into Platinum (100% recycling rate), Gold (95-99%), and Silver (90-94%).
Based on last year's data, SK Siltron's Gumi Plant 2 received the Gold certification, corresponding to a recycling rate of 95-99%. In May, SK Siltron became the first in the semiconductor wafer industry to obtain Gold certification for Gumi Plant 3, and the recent certification for Plant 2 also recorded a recycling rate of 98%, close to the Platinum grade, similar to Plant 3.
SK Siltron's acquisition of global initiatives in the environmental field began in earnest last year when it voluntarily participated in the 'RE 100 Campaign,' which aims to respond to climate change by replacing 100% of the energy used in manufacturing processes with eco-friendly renewable energy. Earlier this year, it obtained Carbon Trust Carbon Footprint certification for all products and declared 'Net Zero' greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 through its sustainability management report.
SK Siltron aims to obtain certification for the remaining Plant 1 in the first half of next year, targeting Gold certification or higher for all business sites, and plans to achieve zero waste landfill across all operations in the future. Additionally, by the end of the year, it plans to acquire further certifications such as the Carbon Trust Water Footprint certification, enhancing its ESG management level through concrete and practical measures.
Jang Yong-ho, President of SK Siltron, stated, "This achievement is the result of the entire workforce's diverse efforts to increase the waste recycling rate as part of improving soil environment, one of the three major focus areas in the environmental sector." He added, "We will further advance ESG management to establish SK Siltron's distinctive ESG leadership and spread positive influence throughout the semiconductor wafer ecosystem."
