[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Chun-hee] On the 27th, the number of new domestic COVID-19 cases reached a record high for a Monday at 2,383 cases based on the reporting date, indicating a continued resurgence of the 4th wave.


The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency's Central Disease Control Headquarters announced that as of midnight on that day, the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases increased by 2,383 from the previous day to 303,553. The sources of the new cases were 2,356 local transmissions and 27 imported cases. Although the number of tests decreases over the weekend causing a 'weekend effect' that led to fewer confirmed cases compared to the previous day, the spread continues with the number of cases surpassing 2,000 for the first time on a Monday based on the reporting date.


Among the locally transmitted cases, 1,673 cases, accounting for 71.0%, were reported in the Seoul metropolitan area. Specifically, 773 cases in Seoul, 755 in Gyeonggi, and 145 in Incheon were confirmed.


Non-metropolitan area cases totaled 683. By region, 115 cases were confirmed in Daegu amid continued spread related to a foreign acquaintance gathering. Other confirmed cases included ▲Busan 42 ▲Gwangju 27 ▲Daejeon 51 ▲Ulsan 19 ▲Sejong 12 ▲Gangwon 40 ▲Chungbuk 63 ▲Chungnam 74 ▲Jeonbuk 43 ▲Jeonnam 16 ▲Gyeongbuk 71 ▲Gyeongnam 101 ▲Jeju 9.


There were 27 imported cases. Among them, 12 were detected during quarantine, and 15 were confirmed locally. Eight were Korean nationals and 19 were foreigners.


Meanwhile, as of midnight on that day, 26,392 people received new COVID-19 vaccinations. The cumulative number of first-dose vaccinations reached 38,091,953. The vaccination rate against the total population is 74.2%, and 86.3% among those aged 18 and over. The number of fully vaccinated individuals increased by 23,804 from the previous day to 23,237,917. The vaccination rate for the second dose is 45.3% of the total population and 52.6% of those aged 18 and over.
