[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] BGF Retail announced on the 26th that it will accelerate the establishment and verification of an integrated greenhouse gas inventory, starting with the verification of the greenhouse gas inventory of its logistics subsidiary, BGF Logis.
According to BGF Retail, BGF Logis completed third-party verification of its greenhouse gas inventory this month from the global certification and verification organization DNV and obtained a certificate that meets international standards.
A greenhouse gas inventory is a statistical system that identifies the causes of greenhouse gas emissions and lists them so that emissions can be calculated by each emission source. In Korea, due to manpower and financial burdens, only a few companies voluntarily establish and manage greenhouse gas inventories, except for some companies such as oil refining and chemical companies that are mandated by the government.
BGF Retail stated that although it is not a company subject to mandatory verification, it plans to voluntarily establish an integrated greenhouse gas inventory by next year that can systematically manage greenhouse gases generated by all affiliates and establish a company-wide greenhouse gas reduction roadmap. Through this, it aims to secure the reliability of greenhouse gas emission management capabilities and proactively respond to global environmental issues.
BGF Retail selected BGF Logis, which has the highest carbon emissions among all its subsidiaries, as the first target for building a greenhouse gas inventory. Since 2016, BGF Logis has been quantifying greenhouse gases generated at logistics sites to manage greenhouse gases emitted during the delivery of products to CU stores nationwide.
The company explained, "In line with the full-scale operation of the Chungbuk Jincheon Central Distribution Center (CDC) in 2019, we established a computerized greenhouse gas inventory, and based on this, we calculated the greenhouse gas emission sources and amounts for the past three years and completed third-party verification this year." It added, "This greenhouse gas inventory verification covered the entire process occurring at logistics sites, including direct emissions such as fossil fuel combustion, indirect emissions from external electricity use, and other indirect emissions from business activities, tracking the carbon footprint in detail."
Meanwhile, BGF Retail has installed vehicle control systems and air spoilers on all delivery vehicles and applied energy saver paint. In 2013, it became the first in the industry to obtain green logistics company certification. Last year, it completed a solar power plant at the Jincheon CDC, achieving an effect of reducing 600 tons of carbon emissions annually. In April, it also introduced electric vehicles for delivery trucks supplying products to stores for the first time in the industry.
