[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] Following the Chuseok holiday, COVID-19 cases surged rapidly, resulting in a continuous increase in new confirmed cases on the 25th.
According to data compiled by health authorities from local governments on the 25th, as of 6 p.m., the number of new confirmed COVID-19 cases nationwide was 2,492. This is 434 fewer than the 2,924 cases reported at the same time the previous day. However, it is 640 more than the 1,852 cases reported last Saturday (September 18). The figure of 2,492 is already the second largest both for this time of day and for the final tally.
By region, 1,806 cases (72.5%) were reported in the metropolitan area, and 686 cases (27.5%) in non-metropolitan areas. By city and province, the numbers are as follows: Seoul 942, Gyeonggi 689, Incheon 175, Daegu 141, Gyeongbuk 85, Chungnam 75, Gyeongnam 72, Daejeon 53, Chungbuk 50, Busan 46, Gangwon 44, Gwangju 40, Jeonbuk 26, Ulsan 25, Jeonnam 19, Jeju 7, and Sejong 3. Confirmed cases were reported in all 17 cities and provinces nationwide.
Since there is still time until midnight, when the tally closes, the number of new confirmed cases announced at 0:00 on the 26th is expected to increase to around 2,700 or more. However, since the number of tests tends to decrease on weekends, the increase may not be as large as expected. On the previous day, 349 additional cases were reported after 9 p.m., bringing the final total to 3,273.
