Gwangju Seo-gu Creates Odor-Free Street with Eunhaeng Fruit

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Shin Dong-ho] Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Seo Dae-seok) will carry out ginkgo fruit shaking work until November 1 to eliminate odors and create a pleasant street environment.

Ginkgo trees are widely planted as street trees because they have excellent environmental purification effects, are free from pests and diseases, and their yellow ginkgo leaves in autumn are beautiful.

However, as the ginkgo fruits ripen and fall, they burst or get crushed, causing a distinctive foul odor that makes citizens frown.

To address this, Seo-gu plans to start ginkgo fruit shaking work mainly around commercial areas and schools in the downtown area with high foot traffic, and then expand it to the entire Seo-gu area including the outskirts where ginkgo trees are located.

Especially this year, as the ginkgo fruits have ripened and fallen faster than usual, complaints have surged, so to minimize citizens' inconvenience even slightly, they decided to introduce a vibration harvester to shorten the harvesting period.

The vibration harvester is equipment that shakes the tree to drop the fruits; it causes little damage to the tree and can drastically reduce working time compared to manual harvesting.

A public official from the Seo-gu Office Parks and Greenery Division said, “With the use of the vibration harvester, efficient work will be carried out, and citizens’ inconveniences are expected to be resolved quickly. Once the ginkgo fruit shaking creates a pleasant environment, residents will be able to enjoy the autumn foliage dyed yellow.”
