'2050 Carbon Neutrality and Climate Action' Seoul City Holds Forum on ESG Indicator Development and Utilization


[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Green Seoul Citizens Committee announced on the 26th that they will hold a forum titled "2050 Carbon Neutrality and Climate Action ? How to Develop and Utilize Seoul-type ESG Indicators" at 2 p.m. on the 30th to develop Seoul-type ESG indicators and explore utilization plans to achieve a carbon-neutral city by 2050.


This forum is the second following the June forum "2050 Carbon Neutrality and Climate Action ? Current Status and Challenges of Corporate Climate Crisis Response." Prior to the forum, the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Green Committee conducted two workshops on the necessity of Seoul-type ESG evaluation indicators, development of Seoul-type indicators specialized in the environment, and utilization plans.


The forum will begin with a keynote presentation titled "Direction and Purpose of Seoul-type ESG Evaluation Indicators" by Yoon Deok-chan, CEO of the Sustainable Development Institute, followed by a presentation on "Ways to Reflect ESG in Seoul City Policies" by Ji Hyun-young, lawyer at the nonprofit organization Duru and member of the Green Committee’s Climate and Air Subcommittee. Park Sook-hyun, director of the Sustainable Systems Research Institute and active in the Green Committee’s Environmental Education Subcommittee, will propose "Linkage Plans between Sustainable Development Goals Indicators and Environmental Indicators."


Next, Yang Ji-an, secretary-general of the Korea Green Purchasing Network, will present on "Current Status and Challenges of Green Purchasing in Seoul." Finally, Ki Jun-hak, chair of the Green Committee’s Climate and Air Subcommittee and industry-academic cooperation professor at Sookmyung Women’s University, will conclude with a presentation on "Establishing ESG Evaluation Indicators for Public and Commercial Buildings in Seoul through Citizen Governance Participation." After all presentations, a general discussion among participants will take place.


The forum will be broadcast live for two hours via the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s YouTube channel "Live Seoul." Citizens can provide real-time opinions or ask questions through YouTube comments. Panel presentation materials will be available on the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s website on the day of the forum.


Yoon Jae-sam, director of the Seoul Environmental Policy Division, said, "To achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, it is necessary to consider various ways to reflect ESG in policies," adding, "We hope many people actively participate in this forum, which will mark the beginning of ESG adoption in Seoul, to gather diverse wisdom."
