‘The Emperor's Beloved Treasure Island’ Nam-myeon Yeondo... 5 Billion Won Invested Over 5 Years from 2022 to 2026
[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Sim Kyung-taek] Yeosu City in Jeollanam-do announced on the 23rd that Yeondo in Nam-myeon has been finally selected for the ‘2022 Island Beautification Project’ organized by Jeollanam-do.
With this selection, a total of 5 billion KRW will be invested over five years starting next year, with 1 billion KRW annually, to develop Yeondo in Nam-myeon, home to 250 households, into a beautiful ecological tourist destination where residents want to live and tourists want to visit.
The ‘Island You Want to Visit’ project, promoted by Jeollanam-do since 2015, is an island regeneration project aimed at improving the quality of life for residents on depopulating islands and developing them into desirable travel destinations. It is a resident-led project where residents directly decide and implement the project contents.
Yeosu City has had three islands selected for the Island Beautification Project: Nangdo in Hwajeong-myeon (2015), Sonjukdo in Samsan-myeon (2017), and now Yeondo in Nam-myeon (2022).
The city established the project plan under the theme ‘The Treasure Island Loved by the Emperor,’ combining records of Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s search for the elixir of life, Yeondo’s unique natural scenery, and abundant local delicacies.
Above all, the strong will of the residents to develop the island as an eco-friendly ecological island living in harmony with nature is raising expectations that it will become the most successful ‘Island You Want to Visit.’
