[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Chun-hee] On the 24th, the number of new domestic COVID-19 cases reached 2,434, indicating that the 4th wave of the pandemic is resurging again after the Chuseok holiday.


The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency's Central Disease Control Headquarters announced that as of midnight, the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases increased by 2,434 from the previous day to 295,132. Among the new cases, 2,416 were locally transmitted and 18 were imported.


Among the locally transmitted cases, 1,747 cases, accounting for 72.3%, were reported in the 수도권 (Sudogwon) area. This is the first time that more than 1,700 local cases have been reported in Sudogwon. Specifically, 903 cases were confirmed in Seoul, 704 in Gyeonggi, and 140 in Incheon. Seoul and Gyeonggi also set new daily records for local new cases.


Non-Sudogwon cases totaled 669. By region, the confirmed cases were as follows: ▲Busan 29 ▲Daegu 128 ▲Gwangju 42 ▲Daejeon 71 ▲Ulsan 30 ▲Sejong 16 ▲Gangwon 43 ▲Chungbuk 60 ▲Chungnam 75 ▲Jeonbuk 62 ▲Jeonnam 17 ▲Gyeongbuk 45 ▲Gyeongnam 37 ▲Jeju 14.


There were 18 imported cases. Among them, 7 were detected during quarantine, and 11 were confirmed in the community. Three were Korean nationals and 15 were foreigners.


On the previous day, 70,616 suspected cases were tested, with 152,338 tests conducted at temporary screening centers in Sudogwon and 23,614 tests at temporary screening centers outside Sudogwon, totaling an impressive 246,568 COVID-19 diagnostic tests.


Meanwhile, as of midnight, 561,860 people received new COVID-19 vaccinations. The cumulative number of first-dose vaccinations reached 37,132,188. The vaccination rate against the total population is 72.3%, and 84.1% among those aged 18 and over. The number of fully vaccinated individuals increased by 375,869 from the previous day to 22,582,280. The second-dose vaccination rate is 44.0% of the total population and 51.1% of those aged 18 and over.
