[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] A baby who was born in a vehicle en route to the obstetrics and gynecology clinic and was not breathing was safely reunited with the mother thanks to the prompt emergency treatment by 119 paramedics.
According to the Chuncheon Fire Station in Gangwon on the 23rd, an urgent call was received by 119 in the early morning of the 17th. A pregnant woman, Ms. A (30), who was about to give birth, requested help while passing through the Seoul-Yangyang Expressway on her way to an obstetrics and gynecology clinic in Seoul, saying "the contractions are becoming too short."
The 119 paramedics arrived at the scene in about 10 minutes after receiving the call, but the mother had already given birth inside the vehicle. However, the newborn baby was pale, not breathing, and showed no response to stimuli.
The paramedics attempted airway suction with a suction device to remove foreign substances from the baby's airway, but there was still no response such as crying or movement.
The paramedics did not give up and continued suctioning, and when they performed positive pressure ventilation to prevent external infection, the baby began to cry. After removing the amniotic fluid and applying warming measures, the baby's complexion finally started to improve.
Following medical guidance via video call with dedicated medical staff, the paramedics cut the umbilical cord and transferred the mother and baby to the ambulance, safely transporting them to the hospital in about 40 minutes.
