Gwangju Seo-gu Promotes 'Urban Forest Creation Project' to Reduce Fine Dust

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Shin Dong-ho] Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Seo Dae-seok) announced on the 23rd that it has secured 2.63 billion KRW for the 2022 urban forest creation project to build a "breathing eco-friendly green city."

By project unit, 1 billion KRW each is allocated for fine dust blocking forests and lifestyle-close forests, 600 million KRW for child safety green forests, and 30 million KRW for smart garden creation.

Seo-gu aims to realize the "breathing eco-friendly green city," a policy of the 7th local government administration, and has provided green spaces to citizens by promoting various urban greening projects such as smart green shelters, rooftop gardens, and future forests.

This national and city funding acquisition is the result of efforts to achieve the "Seo-gu-type Green New Deal Carbon Neutral City 2045," enabling the realization of a pleasant ecological city through the creation of lifestyle-close green spaces.

The fine dust blocking forest is a representative urban forest project that responds to climate change such as reducing fine dust and urban heat island effects. It plans to plant tree species with high reduction effects around the Seogwangju Station railroad to minimize resident damage by reducing noise pollution and fine dust.

The child safety green forest is a project that creates a belt-shaped green forest between sidewalks and roads within child protection zones to secure safe passage for children, improve street scenery, and respond to climate change.

Centered around Uncheon Elementary School in Chipyeong-dong, colorful and educational trees will be planted along a 550-meter pedestrian road section to create a beautiful and safe route to school.

Within Seo-gu Public Health Center, a lifestyle-close indoor garden will be created to improve the health and hygiene environment for public medical staff exhausted by COVID-19 and to help citizens visiting the health center find mental and physical relaxation.

The Sangmu Kumho Health Life Support Center will plant tree species with excellent air purification abilities and create a smart garden equipped with an automatic watering system that supplies water based on plant growth status and can be maintained via smartphone.

Seo-gu expects that by transforming public buildings such as the district office into lifestyle-close green buildings, it will proactively respond to climate change issues like fine dust and provide citizens with healing spaces that easily share garden culture with everyone.

Seo Dae-seok, Mayor of Seo-gu, said, "Living while coexisting with nature and breathing is a citizen's right," and added, "The urban forests to be created will be spaces for rest and healing for citizens exhausted by COVID-19."
