Gokseong-gun Receives Positive Response for Mobile Tuberculosis Screening for Elderly

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Gokseong-gun (Governor Yoo Geun-gi) announced that it conducted a visiting tuberculosis screening for the elderly from the 15th to the 16th.

This screening was carried out at 9 elderly facilities considered high-risk for tuberculosis, targeting a total of 252 people including elderly individuals aged 65 and older and staff members. Gokseong-gun is taking measures to enable residents to detect tuberculosis early and receive timely treatment through this screening.

The screening was conducted with the cooperation of the Korea Tuberculosis Association Gwangju-Jeonnam Branch. Mobile screening equipment was used for elderly individuals with mobility difficulties. Chest X-ray images were transmitted in real-time from the on-site screening vehicle to the headquarters of the Korea Tuberculosis Association for immediate interpretation. For the 41 individuals with suspicious findings, sputum tests were conducted.

A Gokseong-gun official stated, “Tuberculosis can be completely cured if detected early and treated continuously. If you have symptoms such as a cough lasting more than two weeks, fever, weight loss, or night sweats, please get a tuberculosis screening.”

Additionally, the official said, “Elderly people aged 65 and older have weakened immunity and are more susceptible to tuberculosis, but typical symptoms like coughing may not appear clearly. Therefore, even without symptoms, it is recommended to undergo screening once a year.”
