[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Eun-mo] There are predictions that Samsung Electronics' next-generation flagship smartphone series, the 'Galaxy S22,' will have its top-tier model, the 'Galaxy S22 Ultra,' equipped with an S Pen, effectively replacing the Galaxy Note series.
On the 22nd (local time), IT specialist media GSM Arena reported, citing well-known IT tipster Ice Universe, that the Galaxy S22 Ultra model will feature a built-in S Pen.
According to Ice Universe, the S22 Ultra model is expected to have a dedicated S Pen slot. Previously, while models outside the Note series such as the 'Galaxy S21 Ultra,' the first non-Note model to support the S Pen, and the recently released 'Galaxy Z Fold3' allowed the use of the S Pen, they did not have a built-in S Pen. This meant users had to use a dedicated case to store the S Pen, which was considered inconvenient.
The S22 Ultra model is expected to undergo slight design modifications to accommodate the built-in S Pen. It is anticipated that the display aspect ratio will be changed to 19.3:9, the same as the 'Galaxy Note20 Ultra,' to secure space for the S Pen. The previous S21 series all had a 20:9 aspect ratio.
Despite needing to secure more space than its predecessor, the battery capacity is expected to remain the same as the S21 Ultra at 5000 milliampere-hours (mAh). This is an increase of 500mAh compared to the Note20 Ultra's 4500mAh.
The overall design of the S22 series is expected to be largely similar to its predecessor, and the anticipated color options for the new series have also been revealed. According to Ice Universe, the base S22 model and the 'Galaxy S22 Plus (+)' will be available in four colors: White, Black, Pink Gold, and Green, while the S22 Ultra will offer three colors: White, Black, and Dark Red.
Earlier major foreign media reported that the S22 series will be equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 898 and Samsung's Exynos 2200 as application processors (AP). The under-panel camera (UPC) technology, first applied in the third-generation foldable phone 'Galaxy Z Fold3,' is not expected to be included.
There are also predictions that the S22+ model will feature a new triple camera setup. According to IT specialist media LetsGoDigital, the existing 12-megapixel wide-angle camera is expected to be replaced with a 50-megapixel wide-angle camera featuring 1.0-micrometer (μm) pixels, a 1/1.57-inch image sensor, and ultra-fast autofocus. The 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera is likely to be retained.
Additionally, the telephoto cameras on the S22 and S22+ are expected to be replaced with a 10-megapixel 3x optical zoom camera, which was also installed on the S21 Ultra. This image sensor offers improved zoom capabilities despite having a lower resolution than the 64-megapixel zoom camera used in the S21+. The current model provides 3x hybrid zoom and 30x digital zoom, while the new image sensor supports 3x optical zoom without loss of image quality.
