[Asia Economy Senior Reporter Jinsoo Lee] A study has found that adults who consume a lot of dairy products have a 25% lower risk of developing heart disease.

This contradicts previous research suggesting that the cholesterol and fat in milk and cheese could cause heart problems.

However, researchers from the Global Health Institute in Australia suggested in the weekly medical journal PLOS Medicine on the 21st (local time) that other components in dairy products may protect the heart and help it beat properly.

They advised choosing dairy products with fewer additives and without added sugar or salt.

Dr. Matti McLarned of the Global Health Institute, who led the study, pointed out, "Despite ongoing recommendations for low-fat dairy products, many consumers do not follow them," adding, "It is better to choose yogurt over butter and avoid dairy products with added sugar."

The researchers examined the blood of 4,000 Swedish residents in their 60s and tracked their cardiovascular disease occurrence and mortality over 16 years. The results were compared with 17 similar studies involving 43,000 people from the United States, Denmark, and the United Kingdom.

The conclusion was that people who consumed more dairy products had a 25% lower risk of developing heart disease compared to those who consumed less.

However, this study did not specify which types of dairy products the participants consumed.

Dairy products are rich in vitamin B12, which promotes red blood cell production and maintains a healthy nervous system. Additionally, the potassium contained in dairy products greatly helps maintain nerve and muscle health.
