Kyungbok University to Increase Scholarship Benefits for New Students Next Year


[Asia Economy (Namyangju) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Kyungbok University will significantly expand student welfare benefits, including scholarships for new students next year. Currently, 93.8% of Kyungbok University students receive scholarship benefits. In addition, Kyungbok University operates free overseas language training programs, commuter buses, and eco-friendly dormitories that can accommodate about 1,000 students.


On the 23rd, Kyungbok University announced that it has decided to provide Fourth Industrial Revolution Talent Scholarships to new students next year. The university explained that despite difficult financial conditions, it decided to support scholarships for new students to attract outstanding talent amid a sharp decline in the school-age population and admissions resources.


As of 2019, Kyungbok University provides various scholarships to 93.8% of enrolled students. The total amount of scholarships reaches 25.9 billion KRW annually, making it one of the largest in the metropolitan area. Dividing this by the number of students, it amounts to about 4.45 million KRW per student.


Besides scholarships, Kyungbok University operates a free overseas language training program for 360 students annually. This measure aims to cultivate global talents required by the era in line with the internationalization trend. Accordingly, every year, enrolled students participate in two weeks of native speaker classes and local cultural experiences at MDIS University in Singapore.


Kyungbok University also operates 43 free commuter buses: 33 at the Namyangju campus and 10 at the Pocheon campus.


Additionally, eco-friendly dormitories with various convenience facilities are operated at both the Namyangju and Pocheon campuses, accommodating a total of 1,016 students. The dormitory capacity is 702 at the Namyangju campus and 314 at the Pocheon campus. Kyungbok University is also planning to build a second dormitory with a capacity of 654 students at the Namyangju campus.


Kyungbok University has also established an educational program that allows students to obtain a bachelor's degree after earning an associate degree through a major specialization course. By completing the major specialization course for the bachelor's degree, students can receive a bachelor's degree equivalent to that of a four-year university and can also pursue graduate studies.
