[Asia Economy Reporter Joeslgina] South Korea's ultra-high-speed internet infrastructure competitiveness, once rated among the world's best, is declining. The average ultra-high-speed internet speed, which ranked 2nd globally two years ago, has fallen to 7th place this year.
According to Ookla, the operator of the internet speed measurement site 'Speedtest,' South Korea's global ranking for ultra-high-speed internet speed this year is 7th, down three places from 4th last year. This marks a drop of five places from 2nd in 2019.
Monaco ranked 1st. It was followed by Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Romania, and Switzerland.
South Korea's mobile internet speed ranking remained 2nd, the same as last year. It has maintained 2nd place for two consecutive years since being 1st in 2019. The United Arab Emirates took 1st place for two consecutive years. Rankings 3rd to 10th were Qatar, China, Cyprus, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Australia, and Bulgaria. Ookla analyzed that 5G services are changing the overall mobile internet speed rankings, citing the ranking drops of Australia and Canada as examples.
South Korea was the only country to rank within the top 10 in both ultra-high-speed internet and mobile internet rankings this year. Compared to the global average, South Korea's mobile internet speed was over 240% faster, and its ultra-high-speed internet speed was over 70% faster.
The global average speeds for mobile internet and ultra-high-speed internet this year increased by 59.5% and 31.9% respectively from the previous year, reaching 55.1 Mbps and 107.5 Mbps.
