[Asia Economy Reporter Kum Boryeong] Lee Jun-seok, leader of the People Power Party, claimed that "the North Korea policy pursued by the Moon Jae-in administration during the Trump administration in the United States is heading toward a process of being largely discarded."
On the 22nd, Lee met with reporters at Incheon International Airport and stated, "The Moon administration's North Korea policy showed significant errors in its direction during the first 3 to 4 years, and after the Trump administration failed to win re-election, there was a recognition between South Korea and the U.S. that we must head in a different direction from now."
He added, "As a ruling party, we plan to discuss new orientations with senior U.S. officials."
Regarding President Moon Jae-in's proposal for a declaration of the end of the war at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly speech, he criticized, "Rather than making new proposals at the end of the term, it would be better to properly conclude what has been done so far and go through a process of reviewing any mistakes."
Lee will visit Washington, New York, Los Angeles (LA), and other cities in the U.S. from today until the 27th. He plans to meet with senior U.S. officials to convey the People Power Party's North Korea and U.S. policies and encourage overseas Koreans to vote ahead of next year's presidential election.
In particular, he emphasized the strict process of election management. Lee said, "I have a positive stance on expanding overseas Korean voting rights," but added, "I believe that the postal system must be safe, fast, and guaranteed not to be censored to be used as a means to exercise voting rights. We will comprehensively review these aspects."
Joining this visit to the U.S. are National Assembly Deputy Speaker Chung Jin-seok, National Assembly Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee member Cho Tae-yong, Party Organization Deputy Chairman Kim Seok-ki, Party Leader’s Secretary-General Seo Beom-su, and Chief Spokesperson Heo Eun-ah.
