[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] An analysis has emerged that school violence tactics are becoming more sophisticated, involving insults and coercion that are harder to detect than direct physical assault.
According to the 'School Violence Arrest Status by Type' submitted by the National Police Agency to Lee Tan-hee, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, on the 22nd, the most typical 'assault and injury' cases significantly decreased from 9,396 in 2016 to 5,863 last year.
The proportion of assault and injury cases among the total number of school violence incidents also dropped from 73% in 2016 to 51% last year.
In contrast, non-physical methods of school violence, which are relatively difficult to detect, such as insults, defamation, sexual violence, and coercion, approximately doubled.
Sexual violence surged from 1,364 cases in 2016 to 2,462 last year. During the same period, insults and defamation increased from 301 to 733 cases, coercion rose from 103 to 224 cases, and cases classified as 'others,' including detention, confinement, threats, and violations of the Information and Communications Network Act, grew from 383 to 754.
