Seoul City to Manage Street Trash Bins with 'QR Codes'... Pilot Installation at 243 Locations in Mapo-gu

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 23rd that it will begin systematic management of street trash bins through QR codes. Since July, Seoul has been conducting a pilot program on 243 street trash bins in Mapo-gu.

Currently, about 5,000 street trash bins are installed throughout Seoul, and personnel from each autonomous district check and manage daily for damage and capacity saturation of the bins. However, it has been difficult to directly reflect citizens' complaints about street trash bins.

To address this, Seoul plans to manage street trash bins via QR codes, allowing any citizen to request repairs for bins that are poorly maintained. The street trash bins in Mapo-gu equipped with QR codes are managed in real-time through the IoT Smart Clean Road management system operated by Seoul. Any citizen can access the QR code to request emptying of bins that have exceeded their capacity or repairs for damaged bins.

Although street trash bins are regularly managed, this system is expected to enable timely responses to illegal dumping around bins and damage occurring outside of regular management hours.

Im Mi-kyung, Director of the Living Environment Division, said, “Seoul will manage street trash bins more thoroughly to improve urban cleanliness, and the systematic management of street trash bins with QR codes in Mapo-gu is the first step.” She added, “We will do our best so that Seoul citizens can enjoy a pleasant city environment.”

Meanwhile, Seoul plans to evaluate the effectiveness of the QR code management pilot in Mapo-gu by the end of this year and then expand it to other autonomous districts within Seoul.
