Daegu City Announces Basic Plan for Water Industry and Urban Development Strategy 'Daegu Where Water Is Visible'
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Look at Daegu through the lens of ‘water’! Daegu is promoting a global ‘water city’ plan.
Daegu City announced on the 22nd a comprehensive plan to strengthen the water industry development strategy.
The strategy is to create a water industry cluster and attract the Korea Water Technology Certification Institute to grow into a water city and water industry city.
Daegu City selected 20 major tasks under four promotion strategies and core projects for each strategy.
The four major promotion strategies are establishing the world’s best water management system, water flowing in Daegu, water and carbon neutrality, and fostering the water industry.
The first promotion strategy is ‘world-class water management’ using cutting-edge technology. The core projects include ▲building a digital twin-based water supply operation system, ▲96.5% water loss reduction project, ▲safe water supply through ultra-high-level water purification, ▲100% separation of rainwater and sewage, smart sewage management, and ▲creating a virtual water exhibition hall using AR, VR metaverse.
The plan is to digitally disclose the underground water supply and sewage systems to citizens to establish a safe and reliable water supply system, promote the cutting-edge management of water supply and sewage, and expand product demand channels where water companies can apply new technologies.
The second promotion strategy, ‘Water flowing in Daegu,’ includes core projects such as ▲creating an ecological stream by restoring Sincheon, where Nakdong River water flows through Daegu, ▲uncovering covered streams project, ▲sponge Daegu through a network of small streams and rainwater circulation, ▲turning water into a healing tourism resource, and ▲creating landmark waterfront spaces.
The plan is to create spaces where leisure and culture coexist through water that citizens can easily access and enjoy in daily life, and to restore small streams, the lifelines of Daegu City, to establish ecological streams with secured biodiversity and healthy ecological spaces.
The third strategy is ‘Water and carbon neutrality,’ with core projects including ▲building a digital integrated water supply and sewage management system, ▲resource recovery from water supply and sewage sludge, ▲carbon certification system in the water sector, and ▲resource recovery from microalgae.
The strategy aims to realize carbon neutrality through integrated water management by making the energy-intensive water purification and treatment process low-energy and high-efficiency and carbonizing resources through effective resource recovery.
The fourth is ‘Fostering the water industry,’ with core projects including ▲setting Daegu 21 water technology standards higher than Korean standards, ▲nurturing Daegu star water companies, ▲building a K-water network connecting water management institutions nationwide, ▲overseas expansion of K-water industry, and ▲circular human resource development.
The plan is to discover and focus support on water companies with high growth potential, provide tailored support for each growth stage through setting leap stages for strong water companies, and nurture water-specialized talents through customized human resource development based on water company demand.
They also intend to solve water supply and sewage management and Nakdong River water issues through the water industry and water technology. The goal is to have water flowing and visible anywhere in Daegu, improving a pleasant residential environment, achieving 50 water companies with sales exceeding 10 billion KRW, and creating 10,000 new jobs.
Daegu Mayor Kwon Young-jin said, “We plan to promote the water city strategy by reviewing the global situation,” and added, “We will carefully manage the basic plan to provide pleasant and convenient city administration services.”
