Jongno 'Han Culture Encounter at Sangchonjae'... Hanok and Traditional Craft Classes

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jongno-gu (District Mayor Kim Young-jong) is introducing an online traditional education program where participants can enjoy the deepening autumn atmosphere and experience the beauty of our tradition.

The program, titled 'Han Culture Encounter at Sangchonjae,' runs from September 17 to October 2.

Previously, the program was conducted by gathering at the Hanok cultural space Sangchonjae to directly experience traditional culture, but this time it will be operated online considering the COVID-19 situation.

From September 17 to 24, an in-depth lecture under the theme ‘Similar yet Different, Hanok Containing Culture’ will be held to learn about Hanok.

Over two sessions, experts will teach the differences between traditional Japanese and Chinese architecture and our Korean Hanok, and participants will also learn how Hanok styles vary by region within Korea.

Starting September 25, the program ‘Time of Jongno through the Viewfinder’ will be held, where participants will use film cameras to photograph Hanok and alleys located throughout the area, learning camera operation and composition.

Outstanding photos taken by the participants will be selected and exhibited at Sangchonjae next month.

Additionally, a one-day lecture themed on Han culture is also prepared. On September 18, ‘Making a Succulent Garden in My Hand’ was conducted non-face-to-face using the Zoom program.

On October 1, the program ‘Traditional Ornament Made with Hand Stitching’ will be held, where participants sew colorful silk fabric such as Saekdong fabric and hang the finished small decoration on bamboo.

More detailed information about the education content, tuition fees, and schedule can be found on the Jongno Cultural Foundation website or by contacting Sangchonjae.

District Mayor Kim Young-jong said, “We hope many people will show interest and participate so that they can learn about the beauty of our culture and the wisdom of our ancestors through this traditional education program.”
