30-Year-Old Sentenced to 3 Years for Detaining Ex-Partner for Ten Days and Denying It as a "Trip"

[Asia Economy Reporter Seoyoung Kwon] A man in his 30s who confined his ex-girlfriend for more than ten days after breaking up due to an assault case has been sentenced to prison.

Today (21st), the Chuncheon District Court Criminal Division 2 (Chief Judge Wondu Jin) announced that Mr. A (36), who was indicted on charges including unlawful confinement causing injury, was sentenced to three years in prison. On March 27, Mr. A called his ex-girlfriend Ms. B (30), from whom he had broken up due to an assault incident, saying "I want to apologize." After that, he moved from motel to motel using excuses, and on April 1, he allegedly took Ms. B's phone when she tried to return to her home and attempted to confine her.

Mr. A then continuously assaulted and threatened Ms. B while moving between motels in Daejeon, Hongcheon, and Chuncheon until April 12. He repeatedly threatened, saying "If you run away, I will kill you," and subjected Ms. B to continuous cruel acts such as grabbing her hair, hitting her face, and suffocating her because she did not obey him.

When brought to trial, Mr. A denied the confinement, claiming "We just traveled together as a couple," but the court did not accept this. The court also stated, "The nature of the crime is very serious, and the victim's suffering is presumed to be very great," and explained the sentencing reasons, saying, "Considering that he was previously sentenced to prison for similar crimes and committed this offense during the recidivism period, the sentence was determined comprehensively."
