[Asia Economy Reporter Yu Je-hoon] On the 21st, Xinhua News Agency reported that China urged Canada to release Meng Wanzhou, Huawei's Vice Chairwoman, from detention at the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council.
According to the report, Jiang Duan, Counselor of the Chinese Mission in Geneva, claimed on the 20th (local time) during a dialogue of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention held as part of the 48th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, that "Canada has unjustly and arbitrarily detained Chinese national Meng Wanzhou for over 1,000 days and carried out political persecution to suppress the development of Chinese high-tech companies."
Jiang also mentioned the issue of the U.S. Guantanamo Bay detention camp, stating, "Arbitrary detention and serious other human rights violations must be stopped immediately," and added, "Canada must immediately release Meng Wanzhou from arbitrary detention."
Meanwhile, Vice Chairwoman Meng is the daughter of Huawei's founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO). She was arrested in Canada in 2018 at the request of the U.S. government on charges of violating Iran sanctions laws and is currently under house arrest while undergoing trial for extradition to the United States.
