BTS at the UN General Assembly: "The Future Generation is the Welcome Generation"

BTS at the UN General Assembly: "The Future Generation is the Welcome Generation" Group BTS attending the 76th United Nations General Assembly.

[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] "I thought the world had stopped, but we are moving forward little by little. I believe every choice is the beginning of change."

The group BTS attended the 76th United Nations General Assembly as the "Special Presidential Envoy for Future Generations and Culture," delivering the thoughts and stories of future generations to the world.

On the morning of the 20th, U.S. time, BTS spoke as representatives of youth and future generations at the opening session of the UN General Assembly special event, the "Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Moment."

Having spoken at the UN in 2018 and 2020, BTS took on the role of messenger this year to convey the voice of future generations itself to the world. All members delivered their speech in Korean at the UN General Assembly hall.

Before attending the UN General Assembly, BTS asked on their official social media, "How have the past two years been for you, and what kind of world are you living in now?" They listened to the stories of future generations. Various stories poured in from around the world, and BTS introduced photos and writings actually submitted via SNS, voicing the future generations on their behalf.

Introduced by President Moon Jae-in, who spoke at the opening ceremony of the "Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Moment" held at the UN General Assembly, BTS shared photos depicting harmony with nature and the thoughts of future generations on climate change and the environment. They also introduced stories of people meeting friends in new ways, starting studies, and striving to live healthier lives, expressing admiration.

Regarding the courageous challenges of future generations, BTS emphasized, "Rather than being called the 'Lost Generation' due to COVID-19, the name 'Welcome Generation' fits better," explaining, "It means a generation that says 'Welcome' and moves forward instead of being afraid of change." They also mentioned the importance of vaccination, saying, "The day we meet face to face is not far away," and concluded their speech with, "Every choice is the beginning of change. It would be nice if we say 'Welcome!' to each other in this newly starting world."

Following their speech, BTS also delivered a performance that captured the attention of people worldwide. The members sang "Permission to Dance," released on July 9, while moving through the UN General Assembly meeting hall, the lobby, the entrance of the UN building, and the lawn plaza in sequence.

Dressed in black suits, BTS performed brightly and cheerfully throughout. Especially, after the seven members moved the stage outdoors through seven different UN building entrances, the unique free-spirited and lively charm of "Permission to Dance" stood out even more.

In the latter part of the song performed on the lawn plaza, numerous dancers joined, creating a spectacular sight. BTS and the dancers used international sign language choreography meaning "joy," "dance," and "peace," marking the highlight of the 76th UN General Assembly.
