Japan to Convene Extraordinary Diet on Nov 4 to Elect Successor to Prime Minister Suga... November General Election Likely [Image source=EPA Yonhap News]

[Asia Economy Reporter Yu Je-hoon] The Japanese government has decided to hold an extraordinary Diet session on the 4th of next month to elect the successor to Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, Kyodo News reported on the 21st.


According to the report, the Japanese government held a Cabinet meeting on the morning of the same day and made this decision. Accordingly, the winner of the Liberal Democratic Party presidential election, scheduled for the 29th, will be elected as the new prime minister at the extraordinary Diet session convened on the 4th of next month.


Currently, four candidates are competing in the LDP presidential race: Taro Kono, Minister in charge of Administrative Reform; Fumio Kishida, former Chairman of the Policy Research Council; Sanae Takaichi, former Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications; and Seiko Noda, acting Secretary-General.


Meanwhile, Kyodo News reported that the 49th House of Representatives general election in Japan is likely to be announced on October 26 with voting and counting on November 7, or announced on November 2 with voting and counting on November 14.
