According to Gwangju Metropolitan City on the 18th, as of 6 p.m. on the same day, 16 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed, including a student residing in the dormitory of the Sunchang educational facility, leading health authorities to conduct an epidemiological investigation into the infection route.
The confirmed case is known to have undergone testing in Gwangju after a surge of positive cases at the educational facility.
Since the first confirmed case occurred at the facility the previous day, a total of 45 cumulative cases have been reported, including the facility’s representative, a church pastor.
This place is an unlicensed educational facility operated by a church, reportedly running a dormitory-type alternative school and a theological seminary together.
Infections related to foreigners are also steadily spreading.
Six people related to testing of foreigners in Gwangsan-gu, two people related to workplaces employing foreigners, and one person related to a logistics center in Gwangsan-gu have tested positive.
So far, a total of 229 confirmed cases have been reported related to testing of foreigners in Gwangsan-gu, and 98 confirmed cases related to workplaces employing foreigners.
Additionally, two cases were infected through contact with existing confirmed cases, two cases were related to other cities and provinces, one case’s infection route is unknown, and one case was an overseas entrant.
Health authorities are focusing on identifying contacts and movement paths of the newly confirmed cases.
